There are three easy lanes: blend, contrast, or flirt.
Blend means choosing a sock close to the color of your shoe or hemline—burgundy with brown loafers, charcoal with black flats, cream with tan sneakers. The texture becomes the interesting part, so try ribs, a fine cable knit, or a soft slouch.
Contrast lets the sock become the exclamation point. Powder blue with chocolate brown, lilac with gray, butter yellow with navy, or cherry red with almost anything. Repeat that color once elsewhere—in a hair clip, bag charm, stripe, or tiny earring—and suddenly it looks intentional instead of like laundry day made the decision.

A sheer, dotted, or lace-cuff sock softens a Mary Jane without requiring the rest of the outfit to become a costume. Pair it with cropped jeans and a knit, or let it peek beneath a midi skirt.
Keep the cuff low enough to show the ankle. If the shoe already has multiple straps, buckles, bows, or other opinions, choose one simple sock texture and allow everyone to speak in turn.
White feels crisp and nostalgic. Cocoa, gray, and burgundy make the look moodier. Pastels are sweet, but a smoky version—dusty lilac rather than candy purple—slides into fall more easily.
Sneakers can handle a soft slouch
With a low-profile sneaker, try a crew sock gently pushed down once or twice. The goal is relaxed volume, not a fabric avalanche.
This works especially well with leggings, a midi skirt, or loose jeans cropped just enough to reveal the styling. A cream sock is classic; a collegiate stripe or muted argyle adds playfulness. If the sneaker is already colorful, borrow one shade from it rather than introducing the entire rainbow committee.
Shop the drawer before the internet
Pull out every sock you actually enjoy and arrange them by color, texture, and height. Try each promising pair with three shoes. Take mirror photos from standing height, because a combination that looks adorable in your hand may become strangely theatrical at floor level.
Check that the heel stays put, the cuff does not squeeze, and the toe seam is comfortable. Then build the outfit upward from the winning pair.
